Reporting to the VP, the Editor is responsible for creating and driving the editorial vision and editorial operations of Walter Magazine, the leading luxury lifestyle magazine in Raleigh and the Triangle. The Editor will ensure that Walter is part of the cultural conversation across the Triangle,  by writing, editing, and working with the editorial team to assign pieces for the magazine and digital platforms, as well as crafting a regional media presence that best features our writers and editorial voice.

The editor is responsible for the editorial content of the magazine, digital platforms, events, and the performance and collaboration of the editorial team. The editor maintains relationships with freelancers and works within a freelance budget.

The editor is responsible for working closely and collaboratively with the Sales and Events teams on strategic planning, as well as on event generation, planning, and successful execution.

The editor works closely and collaboratively with the editorial team to generate story ideas and to plan future content, assigns and edits all of the content of the magazine, and works closely with the creative director on story placement and illustration. The editor regularly writes long and short features for the magazine, and assists with copyediting and fact checking of all content.

The editor is responsible for the Walter brand, which includes maximizing the reach of the magazine both demographically and geographically.  Additionally, the editor will work with the leadership team to envision and execute Walter brand extensions and growth plans as agreed upon by all parties.

The editor has or will build and maintain strong ties to the area’s cultural community, including leaders and doers in the arts, food, business, design, education, museum, and nonprofit communities.

The editor represents the magazine publicly at magazine events and as a public speaker on panels and conferences.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Along with leadership, establish vision for Walter Magazine editorial and digital platforms
  • Manage all aspects of Walter’s  editorial operations and editorial budget
  • With Art Director, establish a consistent voice and style for Walter
  • Work with editorial team to create a signature style and content that can help Walter stand out and compete with competitors, maintaining and growing its leadership position within the Triangle
  • Develop, edit and write content for Walter print and digital platforms
  • Work closely with event marketing team in the development of Walter branded events and strategies
  • Work with the brand strategy product team to build upon digital offerings to drive content and enhance the user experience
  • Work cross-functionally with sales, social media and operations teams
  • Manage Walter’s freelance teams  

Ideal Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of writing and editing experience at a successful magazine/digital publication
  • A track record of creating and developing exciting new pieces of content that others imitate
  • Strong understanding of online content strategy, SEO and social media
  • Eye for identifying and developing stories that will perform well in the digital space
  • Ability to work with and coach new writers
  • Ability to thrive working in a startup-like environment
  • A strong network of media contacts and writers
